Helping position Alberta for leadership in global CCS

Alberta is positioned to be a global leader

As a fossil fuel power, Alberta’s resources face increasing pressure to maintain our market share as both consumers and governments transition to a lower carbon energy mix. Value added manufacturing and other emissions intensive industries also increasingly factor decarbonization strategies into their location and investment decisions. Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) is a proven element of large scale industrial emissions mitigation strategies and Alberta has the opportunity to be a global leader and leverage this as part of the ”Alberta advantage”. Alberta has the geology, the oilfield services, an experienced regulator, a supportive tenure system and most importantly the reservoir management experience and expertise to develop large scale CCUS capacity relatively quickly, in a safe and efficient manner.

Alberta awarded 25 Hub tenures across the province in a two round competitive bid process in 2022. By year end 2024 three of those evaluation tenures had progressed to the award of Commercial Sequestration Agreements, including Bison’s Meadowbrook project in August 2024. In February 2025 Bison received regulatory approvals from the AER that will facilitate our commencing commercial operations to permanently sequester CO2 in a deep saline aquifer before year end 2025. If successful in achieving that timeline Bison’s Meadowbrook project will be the first Hub, and second CCS project behind Shell Quest (2015), to achieve that milestone.

Working to develop and affordable reliable Carbon storage solution

Our leadership team brings decades of experience in fossil fuel production and reservoir management to help deliver a safe, reliable, permanent carbon sequestration solution to support our customers decarbonization objectives, no matter what the scale.

At Bison Low Carbon Ventures, we provide reliable, scalable, and cost-effective carbon storage solutions for industrial and direct air capture (DAC) emitters. Through our Meadowbrook Carbon Storage Hub (MCSH), we offer permanent CO₂ sequestration in deep saline aquifers, backed by decades of subsurface expertise and a commitment to regulatory excellence, community engagement, and long-term climate impact. We enable decarbonization today—while scaling to meet the megatonne demands of tomorrow.

MCSH addresses early storage needs for smaller decarbonization projects while maintaining a long-term focus on mega-tonne reductions. Many customers need storage to secure funding, particularly for higher-priced carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits in voluntary markets. Between 2025 and 2026, MCSH will be one of the only available storage options for these pilot projects through tailored contracts.
